“You have to deliver quite quickly for people for them to see the change quickly, and I think we didn’t come in with enough of a theory about how we would do that, and why that was important,” he said.

McSweeney admitted that the initial tone set by the administration was overly negative, arguing that Labour should have displayed much more optimism from the outset.

Personal Reflections and Future Plans

Regarding his professional future, McSweeney said he is committing to being out of politics for at least the next few years.

“I need to move on to a new chapter in my life, and to close the old one,” he stated.

He reflected on the discomfort of becoming a highly visible public figure despite his preference for behind-the-scenes campaign management.

“I loved managing election campaigns, and that means that you don’t have a public voice, and you should not be a visible character.

That didn’t work out well for me,” he said.

The interview also touched on lighter moments, including phone conversations with US President Donald Trump.

According to McSweeney, Trump humorously complained during his first call with Starmer about wind turbines killing birds, which caused local foxes to become obese from eating the fallen wildlife.

Regarding the future of the administration, McSweeney expressed optimism about Andy Burnham’s premiership and endorsed the establishment of a regional government hub outside of London.

“If at the top of government there are people who don’t just have a desk somewhere outside London, but actually live their whole lives outside of London, I think that will be a good thing,” he said.

He dismissed potential logistical complaints regarding the decentralized unit, urging the current leadership to bypass resistance and finalize the administrative transition.

“A lot of people won’t like it. I think it’s a good idea.

I think he should just push it through, the logistics can be sorted out,” McSweeney concluded.
