Chicago-based satirical publication The Onion launched a parody version of Alex Jones' right-wing conspiracy website InfoWars on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

The media acquisition follows an 18-month legal and bidding process after courts ordered Jones to pay more than $1.4 billion in defamation judgments for falsely claiming the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax.

The Onion will initially distribute $100,000 to the families from merchandise sales featuring a rainbow-colored InfoWars logo.

Satirical Takeover with a Social Purpose

The relaunch under parent company Global Tetrahedron LLC will feature independent creators and shows mocking Jones' history of fear-mongering, supplement sales, and conspiracy theories.

Despite Jones moving his program to a separate website, the Sandy Hook families plan to claim future assets and earnings generated by his original brand.

"Don't give comedy writers a grudge for 18 months," said Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion.

Collins noted that Sandy Hook families initially wanted the conspiracy platform permanently disabled but eventually supported the satirical takeover to turn the brand toward a positive social purpose.

"It's old-fashioned InfoWars — using the tricks that they use to get people addicted to outrage and, I would say, addicted to anticipation, trying to find the thing that's around the corner that's going to save your life," Collins said.

The Onion continues to pursue additional assets from the original media empire, including an InfoWars studio located in Austin, Texas.
