The decision to sell the 1825-established independent family business, currently led by fourth-generation director Jan-Paul Rutten, was driven by long-term market pressures despite recording a positive financial result last year with 60 employees.
"We hebben hier een mooie brouwerij met 60 mensen en we hebben vorig jaar nog een mooi resultaat geboekt, maar wel in een krimpende biermarkt," said Jan-Paul Rutten, Director of Gulpener.
The corporate shift raises local structural concerns, drawing parallels to the nearby Brand brewery in Wijlre, which saw its main pilsner production relocated to Zoeterwoude by Heineken after an acquisition.
"Je kunt natuurlijk nooit ver in de toekomst kijken, maar deze stap hebben we echt gezet om in ieder geval voor de afzienbare toekomst onze brouwerij in Gulpen te behouden," stated Rutten.
The two entities plan to spend the next nine months detailing their collaborative framework while maintaining regional operations, local staff, and existing ingredients.
"We blijven in ieder geval onze eigen merken maken, met onze eigen grondstoffen en ons eigen personeel. Daar verandert in ieder geval nu niks aan," assured Rutten.

Grolsch, established in 1615 in Groenlo, has focused its brewing operations in Enschede since the early 2000s and has been owned by the Japanese beverage conglomerate Asahi since 2016.
