Swimming was banned at Point Lookout and adjacent beaches on Thursday after lifeguards spotted a nine-foot shark in the water, according to officials from the Town of Hempstead.

The shark was observed from the main lifeguard chair at Town Park Point Lookout on Lido Boulevard, which is considered the most crowded section of the beach.

In response to the town's safety policy, local authorities immediately red-flagged the area to prohibit swimming.

Shark Patrol Deployed

Following the sighting, the town deployed its Shark Patrol to monitor the local waters using a drone and a jet ski.

The presence of the nine-foot shark was subsequently confirmed by additional lifeguards and multiple beachgoers, as reported by the Town of Hempstead.

Supervisor Ferretti was scheduled to meet with the lifeguard who initially spotted the shark to review the municipal response.

Beach officials instructed swimmers to strictly follow all posted beach warnings and lifeguard directions while the Shark Patrol continues to inspect the area.
