"Of course, they love me, but I think they love the (Capitals) boys," Ovechkin said after the final home game.

"They love how we play, because we play for them. It's a big moment right now for us.

If we lose this game, we're out (of a playoff spot). And everybody was dialed in and it was a solid game."

During postseason media availability, Ovechkin noted that his young sons, Sergei and Ilya, strongly supported his continuation with the organization.

"I'll remember this moment," he said as 8-year-old Sergei and 6-year-old Ilya flanked him. "I'll remember playoffs.

Obviously, it's a good thing we have lots of video cameras, cell phones.

They're gonna watch it when they're growing up, and they're gonna remember it and they're gonna enjoy it."

His family's enthusiasm for the city and the roster helped solidify his decision to continue chasing remaining NHL milestones.

"They're excited," he said regarding his sons' reaction.

"They want me to come back because they love the city, they love the team, they love the boys."

Team Management Reacts to Ovechkin's Return

Team management expressed immense satisfaction with the return of their franchise icon as they integrate new offseason acquisitions like Boone Jenner and Vincent Desharnais.

"Our entire organization is thrilled that Alex has decided to continue playing," Capitals general manager Craig Patrick said.

"Alex has proven year after year that he can produce offensively and that he is still the driving force of our team."
