"It's the aunties who hold the culture," said Zhane, a beauty influencer.
Zhane questioned the trajectory of the brand if it fails to prioritize the older demographics that historically sustained the publication and its events.
"And if it's no longer centering older women or women that were here, if you're not catering to the people that hold the culture together, what is this becoming?"
said Zhane.
In response to workplace culture concerns raised years prior, the company previously issued an official statement dismissing allegations of internal toxicity and reaffirming its institutional mission.
"The accusations are false and we fully deny them," stated Essence on their site.
The organization emphasized that it would not engage in public defamation or cancel culture, choosing instead to focus on communal growth and global representation for Black women.
"We are not succumbing to a cancel culture. We are not going to defame anyone.
We are not meeting hurt with hurt.
We know there is a lot of pain and a lot of healing that needs to happen in our communities, but we don't have to destroy each other to heal," stated Essence.
The publication affirmed its long-term commitment to organizational improvement and collaborative development.
"We will continue to do the work to be better every day and come together as an organization for each other and for Black women globally to build together, to change together, to rise together," stated Essence.
Following the conclusion of independent reviews that verified no toxic workplace behavior occurred, Sundial founder Richelieu Dennis expressed relief regarding the findings.
"I appreciate that these independent reviews clear my name, though the most important focus for me is the," said Dennis, entrepreneur and owner of Essence.
