Colombia forward Luis Javier Suarez broke a historic FIFA World Cup record on Friday, July 4, 2026, during the round of 16 match against Ghana.

Suarez entered as an early substitute in the eighth minute after Jhon Cordoba suffered a muscular injury in his left thigh during a challenge with defender Jerome Opoku.

Just six minutes later, Suarez provided the assist for the opening goal in the 14th minute.

According to sports statistician MisterChip, this is the fastest direct goal involvement by a substitute in World Cup history.

The previous record was held by Italian defender Marco Materazzi, who scored nine minutes after entering against the Czech Republic in 2006.

Before the match, Suarez spoke about the challenges facing Colombia's attackers. Earlier tournament goals had come from Daniel Munoz, Jaminton Campaz, and Luis Diaz.

"It is an honor to be here, to represent my country. I fall short of what it means to be here.

It is much more than what you experience outside as a fan.

Being here inside is the greatest emotion as a footballer, and I am enjoying it to the fullest, with responsibility and hard work," Suarez said.

He explained that the forward line, including himself, Jhon Cordoba, and Cucho Hernandez, had tactical duties to open up spaces for teammates during the group stage.

"A goal in the World Cup would be a dream. I work daily so that when the opportunity comes, I can take it with 100% effectiveness.
