Tasmanian authorities have called on the public to respect the privacy of a massive southern elephant seal named Neil, whose beachside appearances have drawn dangerous crowds and caused property damage.

The 1,000-kilogram marine mammal, aged five and a half, came ashore in June for his twice-yearly molting season.

His presence has brought towns to a standstill, blocking roads and damaging traffic cones and fences.

Neil has gained over 1.4 million followers on TikTok, but officials worry that human curiosity could lead to harmful encounters for both the public and the animal.

Risks of Viral Fame

University of Tasmania scientist Sophia Volzke explained that Neil's disruptive behavior, including confronting parked vehicles, stems from a lack of other juvenile seals to practice dominance battles with.

Kris Carlyon, a representative from Tasmania's Department of Natural Resources and Environment, expressed concern over safety risks during a recent news conference.

"Neil's fame is a bit of a double-edged sword," he said.

Carlyon noted that some visitors have engaged in reckless behavior, such as bringing infants close to the seal for social media photos.

"We have had some pretty silly behaviour, instances with people carrying their small babies up close to Neil and simply trying to get that shot for Instagram," he added.

Authorities have asked onlookers not to disclose Neil's specific location online to prevent a forced relocation or a tragic outcome similar to the euthanized walrus Freya in Norway.

"There is a risk here of loving Neil to death," Carlyon warned.
