In places there is rock, called the Vishnu schist, which dates back 1.8 billion years," said Pete McBride, a National Geographic Explorer.

The researcher explained that traveling through the massive canyon depths provides a unique window into ancient terrestrial history.

"It is a time machine," said Pete McBride.

Despite human impacts and environmental challenges, remote sections of the canyon continue to offer undisturbed habitats for native species.

"There are secret alcoves and hidden slot canyons and quiet beaches under mesquite trees," said Pete McBride.

The photographer emphasized that the absence of anthropogenic noise remains one of the most defining characteristics of the canyon wilderness.

"One of the greatest attributes is the deep layer of silence that hangs throughout the landscape," said Pete McBride.

He recalled how natural elements and animal behaviors dictated his schedule during his extensive expedition along the river corridor.

"When I was walking the length, so often my alarm clock wasn’t digital, wasn’t mechanical, wasn’t even pre-dawn light.

It was the soft whisper of bat wings that would circle over me as the temperature changed," said Pete McBride.

Ecological discussions extended to the Pacific coast, where scientists are studying the resilience of coastal redwoods against increasing wildfire threats and intensifying dry seasons in California.

"That mist and fog contains water, obviously, but it also has nutrients like nitrogen, calcium, and magnesium dissolved in it," said Nalini M.

Nadkarni, a forest ecologist.

The specialized coastal climate delivers vital sustenance directly to the unique trees via atmospheric moisture.
