The United States and Belgium face off on Monday with a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals on the line.

Both teams have shown strengths and vulnerabilities throughout the tournament, setting up a compelling matchup.

Belgium's Path and Challenges

Belgium topped Group G but have not been at their best. They edged Egypt on goal difference and finished one point ahead of Iran.

In the round of 32, they trailed Senegal 2-0 before rallying to win in extra time with a controversial penalty.

Rudi Garcia's side has dominated possession, averaging 57% with a 65% field tilt. Yet they have struggled to convert that into clear chances.

Romelu Lukaku's role remains uncertain after a difficult season at Napoli.

Belgium often build through the central channel but can be exposed on the flanks when they lose the ball.

Center-backs Brandon Mechele and Arthur Theate defend passively, and the midfield shielding can be thin. Iran's Mehdi Taremi exploited these gaps with clever movement.

Thibaut Courtois provides a reliable last line, but Belgium rank in the bottom half for high regains, pressing less intensely.

Senegal nearly beat them by using width and creating overloads with full-backs joining the attack.

US Without Balogun

The US will be without top scorer Folarin Balogun due to a red card suspension. Coach Mauricio Pochettino faces a choice among several replacements.

Ricardo Pepi started twice in the group stage and offers a strong hold-up presence, but his back-to-goal style could slow the game.

Haji Wright, who scored the US's only knockout goal in 2022, is a more direct runner who can stretch defenses.

Gio Reyna could play as a false nine, pulling center-backs out of position, while Tim Weah and Brenden Aaronson are also options.

The US have maintained 58% possession in their four games, similar to Belgium.

If they can keep the ball away from Belgium's playmakers, it could unsettle the Red Devils.
