President Donald Trump will arrive in Ankara, Turkey, on Tuesday for the annual NATO summit to demand that member nations immediately implement their defense spending pledges.

The meeting shifts the alliance's focus from initial budgetary promises to the rapid execution of expanded military budgets amid ongoing global conflicts.

Alliance members previously committed to a benchmark of spending 5% of their annual gross domestic product on defense over the next decade during last year's summit in The Hague.

The mandated target includes 3.5% dedicated to core defense requirements and 1.5% allocated for broader security needs.

“President Trump fully expects that all allies will step up immediately and get on the path to 5% and do it with urgency,” said Matt Whitaker, the U.

S. ambassador to NATO.

The administration is pushing for immediate progress as Trump continues to voice grievances regarding the disparity between United States defense expenditures and those of European allies.

“The Trump Trillion” was used as a visual aid by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during an Oval Office meeting last month to demonstrate the increased spending commitments made by allies since 2017.

“If NATO members play their cards right — if the leaders show up demonstrating a commitment and a reasonable plan to meet these spending targets — then it’ll allow President Trump to take a victory lap,” said Luke Coffey, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute.

The gathering serves as the first formal assessment of member states since the spending benchmarks were established last year.
