Dutch prosecutors have launched criminal proceedings against Tata Steel, accusing the company of intentionally emitting substances dangerous to public health from its IJmuiden facility.
The announcement came on July 8, 2026, from the Dutch Public Prosecution Service.

Justice officials allege that Tata Steel poorly maintained its factories, operated without proper permits at times, and concealed hazardous incidents.
The case stems from a collective report filed in 2021 by attorney Bénédicte Ficq on behalf of 800 local residents.
Focus on Coke Gas Factories
The investigation, conducted by the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate alongside police and environmental agencies, centered on the coke gas factories where coal is heated to produce coke for steelmaking.

Emissions from these facilities have long been a source of complaints from nearby residents.
The regional environmental authority, Omgevingsdienst Noordzeekanaalgebied, has already sought to revoke permits for these coke gas factories due to their harmful impact on people and the environment.
