Torrential monsoon rains have triggered devastating landslides across southern Bangladesh, killing 27 people over four days. The disasters buried a religious school and collapsed homes in separate districts.

The death toll surged after back-to-back landslides in the Aziznagar union of Lama upazila in Bandarban district late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, July 9, 2026.

Earlier, torrential downpours since Sunday caused multiple fatal landslides in Cox's Bazar, home to over one million Rohingya refugees in the world's largest refugee settlement.

Refugee Camp Tragedy

In Cox's Bazar, mud and debris engulfed an Islamic study center for girls inside a refugee camp on Wednesday afternoon, killing seven students and one teacher.

Rescue teams pulled 13 people from the buried hut; eight victims died, while five children were hospitalized.

Local district officer Panna Akhter told BBC Bangla that some of the victims were seven, eight, 11, or 12 years old.

Since Sunday, earlier mudslides killed eight Rohingya refugees, including five children. Many refugees live in temporary structures on steep, high-risk hillsides.

In Bandarban district, a landslide struck the Mission Para area around 3:00 AM Wednesday, burying three family members alive.

Fire Service personnel and residents recovered the bodies of Md. Yunus, 28, his wife Ranu Akhter, 22, and their son Md.

Soleman, 4.

A second landslide hit the same location at about 5:30 AM, crushing a brick house wall and killing tenants Md.

Jewel, 34, and his wife Kulsuma Akhter, 25. Authorities handed over the bodies after inquests.

Moin Uddin expressed sorrow and said the administration is conducting loudspeaker campaigns urging people on foothills to relocate to safer ground.

Weather officials forecast additional rainfall, and authorities continue to warn of floods and landslides while evacuating families in high-risk areas.
