The Netherlands' total energy consumption dropped to nearly 2,600 petajoules in 2025, an 18 percent decline from 2000 levels, according to preliminary data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) released on July 9, 2026.

This reduction occurred despite a 14 percent increase in the country's population over the same period.

Fossil fuel usage fell by 28 percent since 2000, while renewable energy consumption grew nearly eightfold to 432 petajoules in 2025, driven by government subsidies, tax incentives, and offshore wind developments.

Slowing Downward Trend

While the long-term trend shows significant decline, the pace has slowed in recent years. Consumption in 2025 was only 1 percent lower than in 2024.

Local media, including BNR Nieuwsradio and Het Nederlands Dagblad, highlighted the long-term shift against demographic expansion, while Tubantia noted the recent stagnation.

Oil remains the primary energy carrier, its share rising from 37 percent in 2000 to 39 percent in 2025.

Natural gas, once dominant, fell from 47 percent to 36 percent.

The CBS reported that higher coal and natural gas use in 2025 compared to 2024 supported increased electricity exports, while higher carbon costs made domestic fossil-fuel power generation more expensive.

Sector-specific data shows residential energy consumption plunged 28 percent since 2000 due to heat pump adoption, insulation, warmer winters, and high gas prices.
