Prince Harry's Invictus Games is at risk of cancellation due to a severe funding shortfall, just one year before the multi-sport event is set to take place in Birmingham from July 10 to 17, 2027.

The UK government has underwritten £26 million for the competition but will only release the full amount if organizers raise sufficient independent capital.

So far, only about £3 million has been disbursed.

Sponsorship Woes

The funding crisis deepened after Boeing, a major corporate sponsor, withdrew its financial backing.

Organizers are now actively seeking investments from local businesses through a newly launched sponsorship program.

Daily Expresso podcast presenter JJ Anisiobi highlighted the financial strain. "Invictus is a great idea, and it started off really well.

It used to be sponsorship was the main way it was funded.

In recent years, and for the Birmingham games, it's now majority by whichever country is hosting the games," he said.

Anisiobi noted that the Duke of Sussex visited the UK specifically to generate enthusiasm and commercial partnerships, but early efforts have yielded limited success.

"The UK has underwritten £26m for next year's Invictus Games. But they will only release that money if Invictus raise enough money for them to go ahead.

Currently, the UK government has given them approximately £3m of that underwritten £26m, which means Invictus have got to raise a lot of money between now and next year for the games to go ahead in its entirety," Anisiobi explained.
