The Los Angeles Lakers finalized a blockbuster sign-and-trade agreement with the Utah Jazz on July 8, 2026, to acquire restricted free agent center Walker Kessler.

The 24-year-old big man signed a four-year, $130 million contract with the Lakers as part of the deal.

Los Angeles sent unprotected first-round draft picks in 2031 and 2033, along with first-round pick swap rights in 2028 and 2030, to Utah.

Roster Overhaul Around Luka Doncic

The move is part of a major roster restructuring following the departure of veteran forward LeBron James, who informed team officials of his decision to continue his career elsewhere after eight seasons with the franchise.

Lakers President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka executed the transaction to fulfill a personnel directive from Doncic, who consistently expressed his desire for an elite frontcourt partner.

"At the core of every great Lakers team is a dominant big man," Pelinka said.

"At just 24 years old, Walker Kessler has established himself as one of the elite two-way centers in the game."

Pelinka noted that the 7-foot-2 interior defender fits the developmental framework under head coach JJ Redick.

"Walker will embody the core pillars we value in our players: high character, high basketball IQ, and elite competitiveness as we enter the next era of Lakers basketball," Pelinka added.

The front office also signed unrestricted free agent guards Quentin Grimes to a four-year, $60 million contract, Collin Sexton to a two-year, $19 million deal, and forward Sandro Mamukelashvili to a four-year, $52 million contract.
