Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) closed the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Sunday after striking a commercial vessel that was using an unauthorized route, according to reports from The Guardian.
The IRGC navy stated that the vessel had jeopardized maritime security by switching off its systems and was struck and brought to a halt.

Iranian officials declared the vital shipping lane would remain blocked to international traffic indefinitely, linking its reopening to a total cessation of foreign military presence in the region.
The IRGC warned that any foreign intervention would be met with a severe response, and new enemy bases in the region would be targeted.
In response, US Central Command confirmed that American forces executed military operations to degrade Iran’s ability to disrupt shipping.
A Cyprus-flagged container ship suffered significant engine room damage from the Iranian strike.

Prior to the escalation, diplomatic efforts were underway in Oman to discuss maritime safety and security protocols for safe passage through the strait.
The situation is further aggravated by political friction, with Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, promising retribution for the recent assassination of the former supreme leader.
He stated that vengeance is the will of the nation and must be carried out, regardless of personnel changes.

In response, US President Donald Trump warned that any threat against American leadership would be met with overwhelming force, stating that 1,000 missiles are locked and loaded and aimed at Iran, with thousands more to follow.
