Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has introduced a resolution urging the United States to join the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The move directly challenges the Trump administration's recent efforts to undermine the tribunal.

The resolution was unveiled two days after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed intentions to dismantle the ICC.

Omar: ICC a Crucial Tool for Justice

Omar emphasized the importance of the ICC, stating, "The ICC is a crucial tool for justice in places where victims have nowhere else to turn."

She added that the US should lead by example in supporting international justice.

European lawmakers have voiced their support for the ICC, countering claims from the Trump administration that the court threatens US sovereignty.

An EU spokesperson, Anouar El Anouni, stated, "We stand firm in our support for the international criminal court.

Attacks or threats against the court... are simply not acceptable."

The ICC has previously garnered bipartisan support, especially following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The late Senator Lindsey Graham had described the court as a venue for delivering justice in areas lacking the rule of law.
