A mysterious coupe prototype has been spotted testing in Japan, sparking speculation that Toyota's new MR2 is closer to production.
Photos and a short video posted on X by user @You_SuiKoyoAZ show a two-door coupe with Yaris-sourced headlights and taillights, a pronounced front splitter, wide fender extensions, and a fixed swan-neck rear wing.

The test mule features large cooling intakes on the rear fenders and a deep hood vent, confirming a mid-mounted powertrain layout similar to the GR Yaris M Concept from 2025.
It remains unclear whether Toyota will revive the MR2 nameplate, the Celica, or both.
Reports indicate the new model will use a mid-engine all-wheel-drive layout with Torsen limited-slip differentials front and rear.
The transmission sits at the back, with a prop shaft feeding power forward.
Engineers have stated that in the Yaris test bed, the car can send all power to the rear or route up to half forward.
New G20E Engine
Powering the new MR2 and/or Celica is Toyota's new G20E, a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder engine.

It replaces the 1.6-liter turbo three from the GR Yaris and GR Corolla.
Toyota says the G20E is stronger and more compact than the 2.4-liter turbo four currently used across its range.
It targets around 300 horsepower and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque in regular applications, climbing to 400 hp and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) in hotter versions.
A racing variant of the same engine is also in development, potentially making as much as 600 hp.
It is still unknown whether Toyota will offer an 8-speed automatic only or include a manual transmission option.
