Widespread consumption of contaminated leafy greens remains a primary multiplier for population-level exposure.

"If lettuce is contaminated and you have high volumes of consumption, then you're going to have probably more exposures," said Hedberg.

Former federal health leadership highlighted the risks associated with public information voids during disease outbreaks.

"Anytime you have a void of information, it gets filled with rumor," said Daniel Jernigan, MD, MPH, former director of the CDC's National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases.

Regular press briefs prevent speculation from overtaking factual guidance.

"If you're not out there regularly communicating, then it does open a gap," said Jernigan. Careful official evaluation does not require total silence from investigating bodies.

"It's OK for them to be careful," said Jernigan. Maintaining consistent contact helps reassure consumers while tracing continues.

"That doesn't mean you have to be quiet," said Jernigan.

Food safety specialists noted that infection occurs primarily through ingested food or water contaminated with microscopic fecal matter carrying the parasite.

"People become infected with cyclospora by consuming food or water contaminated with particles of feces from an infected person," said Kali Kniel, Ph.

D. , professor of microbial food safety at the University of Delaware.

The parasite targets the small intestine, triggering symptoms such as watery diarrhea, cramps, and nausea.

"If left untreated, the diarrhea can last for weeks, but cyclosporiasis isn't usually life-threatening," said Kniel.

Direct person-to-person transmission remains highly unlikely due to the parasite's life cycle.

"That's because after the parasite is shed in feces, it takes one to two weeks living outside the body to mature and become infectious," said Kniel.

Agricultural water and soil exposure serve as the primary contamination vectors for fresh produce.

"Cyclospora can get into produce if it's grown in soil or washed with water contaminated with feces; fresh fruits and vegetables are common culprits," said Kniel.

Additional independent food safety researchers agree that multiple distribution channels are likely involved in the current nationwide surge.

"There may be multiple unrelated outbreaks going on at the same time," said Donald Schaffner, Ph. D.

, professor of food microbiology at Rutgers University.

CDC officials expect case reports to continue rising through late August 2026 as investigative tracing and lab testing catch up with delayed patient submissions.

"We anticipate continuing to see cases increase, possibly through the end of August," said Gwen Biggerstaff, deputy director of the CDC's Division of Foodborne, Waterborne and Environmental Diseases.
