Financial metrics from Sony's recent earnings report underline the transition. Physical game sales generated just over $781 million in the 2025 fiscal year.

In comparison, digital game downloads brought in roughly $6.5 billion, while in-game purchases accounted for $8.4 billion.

Circana advisor Mat Piscatella noted that only seven PlayStation titles sold over 100,000 physical units in the United States so far in 2026.

She added that PlayStation hardware retains distinct advantages regarding system stability, curated titles, and pricing compared to high-end gaming PCs.

Company executives aim to maintain player interest through alternate features within their digital services moving forward.

"We want to consider that, and in the future digital ecosystem ‘how do we engage the gamers’ is something that we would like to continue to explore," Tao said.

Market analysts expect Sony to remain steadfast in its plan.
