Existing physical collections remain playable on current hardware, as the policy only applies to titles published after the deadline.
Sony stated, "This is a natural direction to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs."
Implications for PlayStation 6 and Gamers
Industry analysts suggest the timeline points to the unannounced PlayStation 6 launching in late 2028 without a built-in disc drive to reduce costs.
Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere noted, "Sony will be looking for all the ways it can reduce the cost of its next-gen console, and this is an easy win."

He added that an external disc drive accessory might be offered for backward compatibility.

Hideaki Nishino, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO, emphasized that future systems will focus on unique PlayStation experiences rather than competing with PCs.
He noted increased production of monitors and peripherals as users shift from traditional TVs to personal monitors.
Nishino also highlighted cloud gaming expansion through devices like the PlayStation Portal, which saw strong holiday demand.
