Stellantis has announced plans for a new Level 2++ autonomous driving system that promises door-to-door hands-free driving.

The system, developed with Wayve, will operate on highways and in urban environments.

Set to arrive in 2028, the technology will be integrated into an unnamed North American model.

It uses the Wayve AI Driver to deliver what the company calls a safe and natural driving experience.

Last summer, rumors emerged that Stellantis had shelved its Level 3 STLA AutoDrive system due to high costs and technological challenges.

The new Level 2++ system appears to be a soft reboot, offering a more advanced version of its Hands-Free Active Driving Assist that can also handle city streets.

Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer Ned Curic said combining the STLA AutoDrive platform with Wayve's AI-first approach creates an intuitive hands-free experience.

He emphasized that partnerships allow scaling advanced technology globally while keeping customer safety central.

Wayve CEO Alex Kendall noted that a Stellantis prototype was created in less than two months.

Based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the prototype looks normal but features new cameras in the side mirrors and a sensor at the top of the windshield.

Stellantis also announced a less advanced system using Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride Pilot.

This system, arriving in 2027, will support Level 2+ hands-free driving and be offered on a wide range of vehicles.
