Ulster will face Montpellier in the Challenge Cup final at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao on Friday night, with the Irish province seeking its first silverware in 20 years and a spot in next season's Champions Cup.

The Belfast-based side missed automatic Champions Cup qualification after slipping out of the top eight in the United Rugby Championship following a late defeat to Glasgow Warriors.

Head coach Richie Murphy must manage without several injured and suspended players, including regular captain Iain Henderson. Nick Timoney will lead the team as stand-in captain.

Kick-off is set for 27 degrees Celsius in Bilbao, where thousands of fans have gathered at the Doña Casilda park fan zone.

The match is broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster.

“We've come this far and I think we are a good enough team,” said Timoney.

“We're not just here to go out and give it a crack, we're in a place as a team where we want to go and win.”

Timoney advised younger players to appreciate the rarity of a European final. “Just embrace it and love it.

They are unbelievably special occasions,” he said.

“I've been around long enough to know that these days are rare at best, so you just have to love every second of it,” added Timoney, who hopes the final can serve as a platform for future growth.

“Hopefully we have a great day and we can kick on, and use it as a platform to launch ourselves on to bigger and better things,” he said.
