"They let me be how I wanted to be," said Wembanyama, adding that they "made a lot of sacrifices."
His mother, a former basketball player and coach, deliberately stepped back to let her son navigate his own development path.
"It's not that she doesn't want to get involved in my performance, but she knows her role," said Wembanyama.
"And she knows as a parent sometimes it's better to fade off or not to get too much involved in your children's path."
