The Dallas Mavericks are rejecting trade inquiries for guard Kyrie Irving during the 2026 NBA offseason, despite interest from several rival franchises, according to league insider Marc Stein.

The Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves have contacted Dallas regarding the 34-year-old point guard, while the Houston Rockets have not made any formal overtures despite external speculation.

Ujiri's Stance on Irving

Mavericks team president Masai Ujiri, who took over basketball operations on May 4, informed inquiring teams that Irving remains unavailable.

Ujiri intends to pair the veteran guard with reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg to aid the young player's development.

Irving missed the entire 2025-26 season recovering from an ACL tear but averaged 24.7 points and 4.6 assists per game during the 2024-25 campaign.

"Ujiri has been effusive in his praise of Irving at his maiden two press conferences in Dallas," wrote Stein in his newsletter, The Stein Line.

Roster Overhaul Plans

The Mavericks front office under Ujiri and general manager Mike Schmitz is instead focusing potential trade discussions on other veteran players to adjust the roster after finishing the season with a 26-56 record.

Washington, center Daniel Gafford, and guard Klay Thompson are the individuals Dallas is most open to moving.

Thompson represents a primary trade candidate because he holds a $17.5 million expiring contract for the upcoming season, having averaged 11.7 points in 69 games last year.

Washington is owed $88.8 million over the next four seasons, while Gafford has three years and $54.4 million remaining on his contract.

Rockets' Stance

"Detroit and Minnesota are known to have Irving interest, but The Stein Line has learned that Houston - oft-mentioned as a potential suitor - has yet to make any overtures to the Mavericks regarding the 34-year-old's availability," reported Stein.

The Rockets are reportedly seeking internal development from their younger roster following a postseason elimination by an injury-depleted Los Angeles Lakers squad.
