The Detroit Pistons are evaluating significant offseason roster upgrades to maximize the prime of franchise cornerstone Cade Cunningham after their competitive Eastern Conference campaign.

The front office faces pressure to add offensive spacing and scoring support around their star playmaker before the 2026 NBA Draft.

Cunningham earned the Ally Relentless Player of the Year honor and finished fifth in NBA Most Valuable Player voting.

He led Detroit to a 13-game winning streak and an All-NBA First Team selection despite suffering a collapsed lung on March 17, 2026.

He averaged 23.9 points and 9.9 rebounds, returning for a seven-game playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Trade Proposal Targets Michael Porter Jr.

Bleacher Report analyst Zach Buckley published a mock draft trade proposal where Detroit would acquire forward Michael Porter Jr. and rookie Drake Powell from the Brooklyn Nets.

In exchange, the Pistons would trade their number 21 draft pick, a 2030 first-round pick swap, Ron Holland II, Duncan Robinson, and Caris LeVert.

Buckley noted that Detroit's needs are well-documented: Cunningham needs a co-star, and offensive spacing must improve.

He said adding Porter could be enormous for the offense, which might be one big boost away from cracking contender ranks.

Powell could help offset the loss of Holland, as both are young, toolsy, defense-first wing prospects.

Porter carries a $40 million cap hit for the 2026-27 season but maintained high trade value after averaging a career-high in points while shooting 46 percent from the field and 36 percent from beyond the arc.

Yahoo Sports reported that Porter will become a free agent after next season, giving Detroit financial flexibility if the experiment fails.

Pistons President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon has previously resisted trading future assets for established stars, according to Piston Powered.

The front office must decide whether to pursue expensive star talent or maintain financial flexibility by finalizing long-term extensions for restricted free agent Jalen Duren and wing Ausar Thompson this summer.
