Lawson noted that the signs will be oriented to maximize television broadcast exposure rather than impacting the surrounding neighborhood, while providing necessary revenue for the landmarked venue.
"You don’t see them unless you are in the ballpark, and really the whole point is to be seen on TV, that’s where the revenue comes from," said Lawson.
Wrigley Field holds a federal landmark status, which restricts the team from adding new advertising structures directly inside the stadium outfield.
"This is the one team without any public financing. They’ve got a landmark tax break and they pay their full property tax bill," said Lawson.
The Ricketts family, owners of the Cubs, have steadily acquired the surrounding rooftop buildings across the street from the ballpark since purchasing the franchise.
"It’s an option to keep them viable.

There’s a lot less advertising in the outfield of Wrigley Field than every other stadium, probably by half," said Lawson.
