FIFA has introduced major rule changes and advanced officiating technology for the 2026 World Cup, which is being held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The updates aim to speed up gameplay, protect player health, and resolve tiebreakers more effectively.

Key Rule Changes and Technology

One of the most significant changes is the updated offside protocol, which uses advanced Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT).

The system sends an automated audio alert to sideline officials when an attacking player is offside by at least 10 centimeters.

This technology is designed to prevent unnecessary injuries during illegal sequences of play.

However, referees retain final discretion on the field, and the system cannot make determinations when multiple players are tightly grouped together.

Tournament officials are also enforcing a strict five-second visual countdown on throw-ins to stop time-wasting.

This rule has already resulted in Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Sead Kolašinac turning over possession against Canada.

To combat the North American summer heat, the tournament features three-minute hydration breaks in each half.

These breaks are added directly to stoppage time, alongside traditional delays for injuries, goals, and blatant time-wasting tactics.

For group stage standings, FIFA has adjusted its tiebreaking criteria.

Head-to-head results between tied teams now serve as the primary tiebreaker, shifting overall goal difference down to the fourth position in the sequence.

Local fans and players have also highlighted the need to understand standard soccer terminology amid the excitement of the tournament.
