George Russell claimed an unexpected pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix on Saturday, June 27, 2026, after expertly handling a late-session yellow flag triggered by Max Verstappen's crash.

The British driver adjusted his pace through the caution zone to outqualify both Ferrari drivers and his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli.

While others struggled with the disruption, Russell maintained enough speed while complying with safety protocols, according to a BBC report.

Russell found an optimal rhythm during the final qualifying phase after lagging behind his teammate earlier in the weekend.

Russell's 'Magic Lap'

"It's one of those, when you nail Turn One and you go through fast, but the car doesn't slide, it keeps the [tyre] temperatures a little bit down, so the tyres are cooler approaching the next turn, and then you have more grip, you go through there faster, and the tyres are cooler once again," Russell said.

The British driver explained how that momentum transformed his performance on the critical lap.

"It's this sort of upward spiral. And equally, if you have a bad Turn One, you're on this downward spiral.

It just clicked.

It's just one of those magic laps and I'm just so pleased, because it's been a real tough run for me," he added.

Reflecting on the final session, Russell expressed surprise at the outcome.

"The lap was unbelievable," he said.

He noted the caution flag forced him to alter his approach in the final sector.
