Monaghan mounted a second-half resurgence when O'Hanlon punched a squared ball from Stephen Mooney into the net to draw level, followed by a point from Bannigan to take a brief lead.

Louth secured the win in the final ten minutes after Tadhg McDonnell equalized, followed by a rapid double from Ciaran Byrne and a final point from Ryan Burns.

Former Louth and Monaghan senior manager Eamon McEneaney, currently the Louth minor manager alongside his son Jim as selector, reflected on the unique rivalry between the neighboring counties.

"It was an unusual day, both of us leaving the house and going off in different directions for the same game," recalled McEneaney, referencing a 2012 league match where he managed Monaghan against his son who was playing for Louth.

"It has been great to have Jim involved.

He wanted to dip his toe in the managerial and coaching area so he's been a big help.

It is always a strange one coming up against your home county, but when you are with a team you just have to do your job and get on with it," stated McEneaney.

Reflecting on his playing days with Monaghan, McEneaney remembered a critical late free kick he scored from beyond the 45-metre line to secure a draw against Kerry in the 1985 All-Ireland semi-final.

"It’s funny, people would have talked to me about the free over the years, but when you thought about the game, more than anything else you’d have regretted not winning it because we had a really good team at the time," said McEneaney.

The defeat eliminates Monaghan from the championship, ensuring no Ulster representation in the All-Ireland semi-finals for the first time since 2016.
