Reform UK Members of the Senedd (MSs) have disrupted the newly sitting Welsh parliament in Cardiff during their first weeks as the official opposition, sparking walkouts and drawing sharp criticism from rival politicians and charities over inflammatory remarks.

The populist party secured 29% of the vote in May 2026 to take more than a third of the seats in the expanded chamber, finishing second behind Plaid Cymru, which ended a century of Labour dominance.

The rising tensions prompted a formal complaint from Plaid Cymru and public condemnation from anti-poverty charity Oxfam Cymru regarding the changing atmosphere in the legislative building.

Controversial Comments in the Chamber

The controversy centered primarily on comments made by Caerdydd Penarth MS Joe Martin during First Minister's Questions on June 16, 2026, and an international spending debate the following day.

Mr. Martin was subsequently appointed to the nine-member cross-party Equality, Human Rights and Social Justice Committee on June 23, 2026, which is tasked with scrutinizing the Welsh Government's Nation of Sanctuary policy.

Following his committee appointment, Mr. Martin expressed his defiance on social media, using an anti-establishment black flag emoji alongside an image of rival politicians posing with refugees.

"I will fight for real human rights in Wales including, protecting our families, defending free speech, securing our borders and putting Welsh communities first," stated Joe Martin, Reform MS.

The MS defended his contentious legislative speeches by claiming that political opponents and media outlets were orchestrating a campaign to silence his platform.
