"That was an immediate reminder of what England are going to miss," Vaughan remarked.

Vaughan noted that Stokes' immediate wicket after the announcement perfectly encapsulated his career-long ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs for England.

"That's exactly why he is an England great.

I didn't see it coming [his retirement], but I did see the wicket coming because he has done that throughout his entire career," Vaughan continued.

The all-rounder declined to elaborate on his immediate motivations in an emotional video released by the ECB, stating that his detailed reasons could wait.

"Whenever England need something, he has always delivered," Vaughan added.

Vaughan voiced hope that recent management issues and rumors of internal fallouts did not dictate the timing of the captain's exit.

"I'll be so disappointed if it is, if English cricket has got to the stage where one of our greatest has had to step down because of the way that whole situation was handled," Vaughan said.

The commentator expressed his wish that the decision came purely from the player recognizing the natural end of his international drive.

"There's so many rumours about fallouts but I do hope that wasn't the case, I hope that he just woke up one morning and said he'd had enough.

He's given it everything for such a long period of time," Vaughan stated.

Vaughan further pointed to a potential breakdown in communication between the skipper and team officials as a critical factor.

"It sounds like he's just woken up and gone, 'Nope, the fire just isn't quite burning any more,'" Vaughan added.

A perceived lack of mutual confidence between the leader and the cricket board was cited by Vaughan as a damaging element for any captaincy.

"Lack of trust," Vaughan suggested.
