England captain Ben Stokes stunned the cricket world on Sunday by announcing his retirement from international cricket during the fourth day of the deciding third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

The England and Wales Cricket Board released a statement regarding the 35-year-old all-rounder's decision 15 minutes before the tea interval, marking the conclusion of his 15-year international career.

Immediately after the public announcement, Stokes delivered a wicket by dismissing Zak Foulkes before opening the second-innings batting with Ben Duckett, scoring 30 runs off 20 balls.

Vaughan Reacts to Stokes' Departure

Former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed his concerns over the sudden departure on BBC Test Match Special, highlighting the massive leadership deficit the national team faces moving forward.

"England have got to move forward now - it's hard to say that when it's only just happened," Vaughan said.

Vaughan emphasized that the team must figure out how to navigate future matches without the unique presence and competitive drive of their talismanic captain.

"But they have got to look at how they build a team without Ben Stokes, and it's not just the player - it's the persona," he added.

The former skipper praised Stokes' clutch performances, acknowledging his reputation as a definitive match-winner under intense pressure.

"He's got the winning mentality, and I have him as one of England's greatest when the pressure's on," Vaughan stated.

Stokes had previously informed his teammates of his retirement before play began on day four, following a turbulent period where he missed the second Test at The Oval due to an incident in a London nightclub.
