West of Bilbao, the Picos de Europa mountain range presents a landscape of forbidding peaks that host an unexpected world of wild flowers, animals, and resilient cheesemakers, as reported by The Guardian.

The mountainside bursts with color from tiny Alpine flowers, alive with bees and crickets, surrounded by jagged summits rising over 2,500 meters.

Hikers crossing a ridge discover Cabin Verónica, a mountain refuge made from a World War II aircraft carrier gun turret.

Dragged up by mule from a Bilbao breakers' yard in 1961, it now serves as a summer home for Jorge, its custodian.

"I love it," says Jorge. "Why would I need cities and crowds when I have this?"

History and Hidden Depths

The range historically served as a center of resistance to Roman rule and later the Moors. It harbors unique flora, butterflies, and a distinct chamois subspecies.

Beneath the peaks lies a vast underworld of rivers and giant caverns nearly a mile deep, where speleologists map extensive cave networks.

"My grandfather built this cabin in 1944 when I was three years old," says Maria, a local cheesemaker.

"Everyone would come up here for summer, bringing their animals with them. Now there's only me."

Maria feared the tradition might die, but her son's interest offers hope. "I feared this tradition might die," she says.

"But my son is interested, so there is hope it will continue."
