The executive reiterated that building positional flexibility is vital due to the unpredictable nature of developing netminders.
"With some teams you have these rigid rules, 'take a goalie every year,' or, 'I'm not going to take goalies at this or that stage.'
I think you want to add flexibility. You know the (long odds with goalies), but every pick is unique," Chayka added.
Assistant General Manager of Player Development Judd Brackett expressed confidence in the specialized evaluation staff overseeing the new recruits.
"There's some projecting there, but the goaltending evaluation staff here (including Leafs and Marlies on-ice coaches Curtis Sanford and Hannu Toivonen) have done an excellent job," Brackett said.
