Ottawa and Gatineau will observe Canada Day on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, with statutory closures and adjusted schedules for municipal services, retail outlets, and public transit, according to reports from Le Droit.

Retail and Alcohol Sales

Most alcohol retailers, including the SAQ, LCBO, and SQDC, will be closed.

Shopping centers on both sides of the Ottawa River will also shut down, except for the Rideau Centre, which will operate from 10 a.

m. to 6 p.

m.

On the Quebec side, most businesses will close, though convenience stores, pharmacies, restaurants, and bars may remain open.

In Ottawa, select grocery stores and pharmacies may continue operations.

Municipal Services

Gatineau service centers and the Maison du citoyen will close, but waste collection and eco-centers will run on regular schedules.

Ottawa will delay recycling and waste collection by one day, except for multi-residential buildings.

Recreational facilities such as outdoor pools, beaches, and splash pads will remain open in both cities.

Gatineau will open certain libraries with extended hours to serve as cooling spaces during expected high heat.

Cultural institutions: local municipal museums and art galleries will close, but national museums in both cities will offer free admission.

Transportation and Parking

Extensive street closures will occur around downtown Ottawa and Parliament Hill, along with the closure of several bridges.

OC Transpo and the Société de transport de l'Outaouais will provide free transit service.

Street parking will be free in Gatineau during the holiday, but regular parking regulations will still apply in Ottawa.
