New York Islanders captain Anders Lee will test the NHL unrestricted free agent market on July 1, 2026, after contract extension negotiations broke down over the length of the deal.
The 35-year-old forward wanted a three-year contract extension, but Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche held firm on a two-year offer.

Although New York improved its financial terms late in the process, the disagreement over duration prompted Lee to explore the open market.
Lee recently completed a seven-year contract signed in July 2019 with an annual salary cap hit of $7 million.
He remains open to returning to New York, but entering free agency allows him to receive offers from other NHL teams, with the Minnesota Wild cited as a potential suitor.
TSN hockey reporter Pierre LeBrun revealed the timeline of the final discussions on Tuesday morning.

LeBrun noted that with Alex Tuch and Bobby McMann off the board, Lee becomes the top forward available when the UFA market opens at noon ET on Canada Day.
Lee has spent his entire 14-year career on Long Island since being selected in the sixth round of the 2009 NHL Draft.
He was named captain in 2018 following John Tavares' departure.
In 923 regular-season games, Lee has recorded 308 goals and 549 points, leaving him 77 games short of the 1,000-game milestone with the franchise.
