The remains of a newborn infant were found inside a portable restroom at a Michigan music festival on Sunday morning, prompting a state police investigation.

The discovery occurred at the Electric Forest festival, a four-day electronic dance music event held at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, about 60 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.

A maintenance worker employed by the restroom vending company found the body while performing routine cleaning in the festival's camping grounds.

Michigan State Police issued an official statement regarding the location and condition of the body.

"The remains of a neonate were found in a portable restroom in the camping area at the Electric Forest festival Sunday morning," Michigan State Police said.

Emergency personnel and investigators secured the area to collect evidence after the discovery.

Authorities are urging any festivalgoers who might have witnessed suspicious behavior near the campgrounds to contact law enforcement immediately.

"If you were in the area and observed anything unusual, or if you have information that you believe may be relevant, we encourage you to come forward," Michigan State Police said.

The electronic music event featured headline acts including Illenium, Excision, Kaskade, GRiZ, Chris Lake, and The String Cheese Incident.

Traffic authorities expected massive vehicular delays surrounding Rothbury on Monday as thousands of attendees departed the venue.
