A wildfire that ignited on the slopes of Mt. Massive has prompted the U.
S. Forest Service to close a significant portion of two major hiking trails.

The closure affects a 33.75-mile stretch of the Continental Divide Trail and Colorado Trail between Twin Lakes and Tennessee Pass.
The order took effect on June 29, 2026.
Fire Details and Evacuation
The fire started Sunday afternoon on Colorado's second-tallest peak. It rapidly expanded to more than 1,000 acres, overlapping the trail corridor.

Lake County issued a mandatory evacuation order due to the fire's proximity. Containment remains at 0%, according to the Watch Duty tracking app.
Hiker Guidance
The Continental Divide Trail Coalition and Colorado Trail Foundation have urged hikers to avoid the area entirely. No detour routes are currently available.
Northbound hikers should stop at Twin Lakes, while southbound hikers should stop at Tennessee Pass. Hikers can resupply and wait for updates in Leadville.
