Victor Willis, the founding lead singer and co-writer of the iconic disco group Village People, died on Monday, June 30, 2026, at the age of 74 following a brief but aggressive illness.

The announcement was made by his bandmates and his wife, lawyer and entertainment executive Karen Huff-Willis, just one day before what would have been his 75th birthday.

Willis co-founded the troupe in 1977 alongside Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo. He famously portrayed a policeman and a naval officer while co-writing massive hits such as "Y.

M. C.

A. ," "Macho Man," and "In the Navy."

His music career spanned nearly five decades, including a solo period after leaving the Village People in the 1980s before rejoining the group in 2017.

Band and Family Confirm Passing

"We are profoundly sad to announce the death of Victor Willis, lead singer of Village People," the band wrote on Facebook.

"Victor passed on Monday June 30, 2026 of a short but aggressive illness. Privacy is requested."

His wife also shared her grief on his official Facebook account.

"It is with profound sadness that I must announce the death of my husband, Victor Willis," she wrote, requesting space for the family during their bereavement.
