Americans consume an estimated 50 billion hot dogs each year, making them a staple of backyard barbecues and summer celebrations.

However, health and dietary experts caution that these popular foods are among the most highly processed and potentially harmful items in the modern diet.

According to Eric Mittenthal, president of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans eat about 7 billion hot dogs during the summer season alone, including 150 million on the Fourth of July.

He notes that hot dogs have deep roots in American culture, brought by European immigrants and evolving regionally.

Julia Zumpano, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic, explains that hot dogs are designed to be irresistible.

They are hyper-palatable due to high salt and fat content, which triggers pleasure centers in the brain.

“We get a big cascade of pleasure eating them,” she says, adding that typical toppings like white flour buns, ketchup, and relish add more sugar, salt, and carbs.

Health Risks and Cancer Classification

Medical professionals classify hot dogs as severe nutritional hazards.

Michael Jacobson, a food scientist and founder of the National Food Museum, states bluntly: “They are among the worst foods you can eat if you eat them often.

Once in a while is OK, but eating them on a regular basis is a very bad idea.”

The manufacturing process involves high amounts of saturated fats, sodium, chemical fillers, and sometimes mechanically separated poultry paste.
