Food and Drug Administration has upgraded a voluntary recall of certain Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips to its most serious classification.

On July 2, 2026, the FDA reclassified the recall as Class I, indicating a reasonable probability that exposure could cause serious health consequences or death.
Utz Quality Foods initially recalled the products in May after potential salmonella contamination was identified.
Affected Products
The recall covers nine specific varieties, including Zapp's Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch, Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar, Dirty Brand Maui Onion, Zapp's Brand Big Cheezy, and Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion potato chips, in multiple sizes.

Salmonella infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Utz stated the recall was conducted out of an abundance of caution, noting that seasoning batches had tested negative before production.
No consumer illnesses have been reported to the company.

Consumers are advised to discard the affected chips immediately and contact Utz customer service for a refund.
