British wildcard Arthur Fery advanced to the third round of Wimbledon on Thursday, defeating Finland's Otto Virtanen 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-3 on a packed Court 18.

The 23-year-old, ranked 114th, fought back from a set down to keep local hopes alive at the All England Club.

Fery had earlier become the first British man to reach the second round after rallying past Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur on Tuesday.

"It's great to do it for the UK.

Selfishly I am doing it for myself first - but I'm always behind the other players and wishing them success," Fery said.

He expressed satisfaction with his emotional control during the match, securing a Grand Slam third-round spot for the first time in his career.

The Princess of Wales, Catherine, patron of the All England Club, watched alongside Sir Andy Murray. Fery admitted he was unaware of her presence.

"I probably would have been a bit more tight if I did," he said.

Fery will next face either Zizou Bergs of Belgium or Portugal's Jaime Faria, both unseeded.

Meanwhile, Katie Swan became the last British woman to exit the singles draw after a 6-1, 6-4 loss to world No. 22 Madison Keys on Court One.

Swan, 27, was returning to Wimbledon after a three-year absence due to a near career-ending back injury. She had beaten Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round.

Keys broke early to take the first set 6-1.

Swan converted a break point in the second set, but a forehand error from the tired British player gave Keys a third break to seal the match.

The defeat ended the British women's campaign after 15 home players fell in the opening round, the highest number of first-round British exits since 1988.
