The United States Air Force is preparing a $4.2 billion investment to upgrade its three primary operating bases in the United Kingdom, according to official documents obtained by The Guardian.
The major infrastructure program aims to modernize RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Fairford to reinforce their long-term strategic roles in Europe.

Scope of the Investment
According to an Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center presentation, the funds will upgrade airfield infrastructure, maintenance facilities, utilities, and munitions storage.
Roughly 11,000 US military personnel are currently stationed across the UK under bilateral and NATO agreements, as reported by the House of Commons Library.
The operational importance of these installations increased following recent Middle East tensions and ongoing NATO security efforts.
In March 2026, the British government permitted American forces to utilize these bases for "specific and limited defensive action against missile facilities in Iran," as described by UK Government ministers.

RAF Lakenheath will receive the largest share of funding to support the 48th Fighter Wing, which operates F-35A and F-15E jets.
Meanwhile, RAF Mildenhall hosts refueling and special operations wings, while RAF Fairford serves as a forward location for strategic bombers.
Although neither the US Department of Defense nor the UK Ministry of Defence has formally announced the initiative, the planned upgrades are intended to sustain higher operational tempos.
