The City of Toronto has cancelled its outdoor World Cup viewing parties at Nathan Phillips Square scheduled for Thursday, citing extreme heat forecasts and severe strain on safety resources.
Environment Canada predicted temperatures peaking at 35 degrees Celsius, though conditions are expected to ease slightly before the evening match between Portugal and Croatia kicks off at Toronto Stadium.

FIFA and Stadium Operations Continue
International soccer governing body FIFA announced that stadium operations and official fan zones will proceed as planned despite the municipal cancellations.
FIFA stated it "continues to monitor conditions in real time" and "stands ready to apply established contingency protocols should extreme weather events occur."
The organization detailed that its standard severe weather measures incorporate designated hydration breaks and specialized work-rest cycles for operational personnel.
Local authorities indicated that high temperatures are compounding existing pressure on municipal infrastructure and public safety personnel.
The Toronto Police Service said it is "well positioned to support FIFA-related events … while maintaining policing operations across the city."

The law enforcement agency noted that ongoing weather conditions require additional deployments across various public sectors.
"In addition to tournament-related activity, Toronto is also experiencing extreme heat, which can increase demand across a range of city services," said the Toronto Police Service.
The logistical pressure follows prior staffing shortages involving Star Security, a private contractor retained by local authorities for the tournament.
The office of local councillor Chris Moise noted that security management costs "includes costs that the police required in order for them to feel comfortable and sign off on the project."
Financial impacts of security management have caused municipal expenditures to rise significantly for tournament-related traffic closures.
