Microsoft is testing a new disc-to-digital entitlement feature that allows users to digitize their physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X game collections, according to reports from The Verge and Windows Central.
The feature grants a digital entitlement tied to specific physical discs when inserted into a compatible console.

This enables subsequent gameplay without the disc while maintaining the ability to transfer ownership if the physical copy is sold or shared.
Next-Generation Console May Go Disc-Less
Reports indicate that the upcoming next-generation Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix, may ship entirely without a built-in disc drive.

This shift follows a broader industry trend, including Sony's decision to cease physical PlayStation game production after January 2028.
The new program currently excludes original Xbox and Xbox 360 software. Microsoft has noted potential compatibility limitations with older physical media during its testing phase.
