A dangerous heat wave sweeping across the central and eastern United States has forced multiple communities to cancel, delay, or modify their 250th Independence Day celebrations heading into the July 4, 2026, holiday weekend.
The National Weather Service reported that the high-pressure heat dome will persist along the East Coast through the weekend, pushing temperatures past 100 degrees Fahrenheit in cities like Philadelphia, Boston, New York, and Washington, D.

Officials altered schedules in Boston and Philadelphia, while multiple towns in Pennsylvania canceled parades entirely to protect residents and first responders.
Amtrak canceled some routes, including the Acela between Boston and Washington, due to the extreme conditions.
Meteorologists warned that high humidity would push heat indexes even higher, compounding health risks and trapping fireworks smoke near the ground, which experts say will severely degrade air quality across major metropolitan areas.
