Free agent LeBron James is evaluating 10 potential NBA teams for his next contract after deciding to leave the Los Angeles Lakers, his agent Rich Paul revealed on July 3, 2026.
Paul listed the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Dallas Mavericks as realistic destinations during a television appearance.

The 41-year-old forward is taking a patient approach to his final career contract after confirming his departure from Los Angeles, where his relationship with the front office soured following the 2021 Russell Westbrook trade.
Key Factors Behind the Decision
Roster decisions and familiarity drive several options on the list, including Miami's stable leadership and the Nuggets' front-office relationships, according to Paul.
Internal organizational friction ultimately prompted the veteran to seek a new destination, as reported by ESPN.
"There was no personal rift between James and Doncic, multiple team sources told ESPN," said Dave McMenamin, ESPN Reporter.
The two superstars maintained mutual respect despite navigating challenges together on the court as primary ball-handlers.

"While they worked through growing pains on the court as two ball-dominant players, they got along and respected one another off of it," McMenamin added.
The underlying tension stemmed from historical roster movements, particularly the acquisition of Russell Westbrook, which fractured the relationship between the player and management.
"There was more of a disconnect between James and the organization, sources said, one that started during the doomed 2021-22 season following the Russell Westbrook trade and never fully recovered," McMenamin reported.
James ultimately chose to seek a new environment for the final phase of his basketball career after the Lakers shifted their focus toward building around Luka Doncic, who arrived in February 2025.

"Ultimately, James recognized the Lakers were in a different phase with their franchise and chose to prioritize his basketball happiness, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania, in finding his next situation — which will be the last stop of his Hall of Fame career," McMenamin said.
