Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets during the British Grand Prix sprint qualifying sessions at Silverstone on Friday, July 3, 2026.

The Mercedes driver outpaced the field, while championship leader Max Verstappen faced significant difficulties with his car's balance.

Verstappen finished sixth in the opening practice session, nearly a full second behind Hamilton.

He continued to struggle during the knockout qualifying segments, particularly losing time in the third sector on soft tires.

Ferrari showed strong pace throughout the day, with Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli challenging for top positions. Red Bull Racing, however, encountered unexpected difficulties.

Formula 1 reporter Louis Dekker analyzed the competitive landscape after the initial sessions.

He noted that four teams currently hold a clear advantage over the rest of the grid.

"This practice confirms that four teams are setting the pace: Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull Racing," Dekker said.

"The rest are not in contention and are fighting for P9, unless the top eight encounter problems."

Dekker spoke with Haas driver Oliver Bearman, who qualified 14th in front of his home crowd. Bearman acknowledged the performance gap separating the midfield from the frontrunners.

"We are too fast for the backmarkers and too slow for the top eight," Bearman said.

He remained hopeful that strategic opportunities during the main races could help his team capitalize on potential errors from leading drivers.

"In the race, we have to hope we get chances if others ahead of us have bad luck.

We must strike when such an opportunity arises," he added.

The session also saw early exits for several prominent drivers.
